Homestead is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is a suburb of Miami and a large agricultural area. The city was incorporated in 1913 and is the second-oldest city in Miami-Dade County. The name of the city comes from when the Florida East Coast Railway extension to Key West was being built. The rail line was passing through an area that was opening for homesteading. The area did not have a name and was called Homestead County, later shortened to Homestead by the engineers who mapped the area.
